Device Security

Remote workers often use personal devices, or use work devices for personal tasks. Each context introduces risks. A laptop used at a coworking space is physically accessible to strangers when you step away for coffee. A home computer shared with family members may have software installed that you would not choose for a work device.

Shoulder Surfing

Typing passwords in public spaces is inherently risky. Anyone sitting nearby can observe your screen or your keyboard. High-resolution cameras in crowded spaces can capture credentials from surprising distances. Coffee shops, libraries, coworking spaces, and airports are popular remote work locations. Each comes with elevated security risks.

Before You Connect

  1. Verify the network name with staff. Attackers create fake Wi-Fi networks with names like “CoffeeShop_Free_WiFi” to intercept traffic
  2. Use your phone’s hotspot when possible. Your cellular connection is significantly more secure than public Wi-Fi
  3. Enable your firewall – macOS has a built-in firewall that should always be active
  4. Disable automatic Wi-Fi connections – do not let your device connect to remembered networks without your explicit approval

While You Work

  1. Use biometric authentication exclusively – Touch ID or Face ID instead of typing your master password where it could be observed
  2. Position your screen away from observers – sit with your back to a wall when possible
  3. Use a privacy screen – a physical filter that limits the viewing angle of your display
  4. Lock your device whenever you step away – even for 30 seconds. Cmd+L on macOS locks your screen instantly
  5. Do not access highly sensitive accounts (banking, server root access) on public networks unless you are using a VPN

When You Leave

  1. Disconnect from the network before packing up

Credential Sharing for Distributed Teams

Remote teams need to share credentials regularly, and the temptation to use the communication tools already at hand – Slack, email, text messages – is strong. Resist it.

Every password shared through a chat message persists indefinitely in that service’s history and is accessible to anyone who gains access to the workspace. Making It Practical

Security advice is only useful if people follow it. The practices in this guide may seem extensive, but they quickly become habitual. Letting your password manager generate and fill unique passwords is less work than trying to remember reused ones. Enabling 2FA adds a few seconds to login, but it eliminates the existential risk of a single password compromise taking down your entire digital presence.
