When you store an encrypted .kdbx file in Google Drive, Google’s servers store the raw bytes of the encrypted file. These bytes are the output of AES-256, ChaCha20, or Twofish encryption – ciphertext that is computationally indistinguishable from random noise. There is no metadata in the file that reveals its contents. The file extension .kdbx indicates it is a KeePass database, but the contents are fully opaque.

Google’s terms of service grant them the right to process your files for service delivery (sync, storage, indexing). In practice:

  • Google cannot decrypt KDBX files – They do not have your master passphrase. The encryption algorithms used (AES-256, ChaCha20) have no known practical attacks. Google’s computing resources, while vast, are nowhere near sufficient to brute-force a properly configured KeePass database.
  • Automated scanning is irrelevant – Google scans files for malware and (in some cases) for terms-of-service violations. An encrypted KDBX file will not trigger these systems because its content is opaque binary data.
  • Legal requests yield ciphertext – If Google is compelled to hand over your files in response to a court order, they can only provide the encrypted file. The recipient faces the same cryptographic barrier as any attacker.

Your database is encrypted locally using your chosen algorithm and key derivation settings. Setup Guide

Desktop: macOS and Windows

Step 2: Place your database in Google Drive

Move or copy your .kdbx file to a folder within Google Drive. Choose a location that makes sense to you – the root of “My Drive” works fine, or create a dedicated folder.

Google Drive’s web interface allows you to download your .kdbx file from any browser. While you cannot open the database directly in a browser (you need a KeePass-compatible application), you can download the file and open it with a local app. This provides emergency access from any computer.

Sync Behavior and Performance

Sync Speed

Google Drive for Desktop detects file changes almost immediately (within 1-2 seconds) on desktop platforms. Upload of a modified password database (typically a few hundred KB) completes in seconds on a broadband connection. Push notifications to other devices trigger within 5-15 seconds. Total propagation time for a small file change is typically under 30 seconds.

Conflict Handling

If you edit the database on two devices before they sync, Google Drive handles the conflict by keeping the most recently saved version and creating a copy of the other version with a “(1)” or “(conflict)” suffix in the filename.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication

  2. Enable two-factor authentication on your Google account. This is more important than any other security measure related to Google Drive.

  3. Use end-to-end encryption settings in your KeePass database (KDBX 4.0 with Argon2d and ChaCha20 or AES-256). These settings protect your passwords regardless of what happens to your Google account or Google’s infrastructure.

  4. Keep a local backup outside of Google Drive. Copy your .kdbx file to a USB drive or local folder periodically. If your Google account is compromised and the attacker deletes your files, you will not lose access to your passwords.

  5. Close the database before switching devices to avoid sync conflicts. Wait 10-15 seconds after saving before opening on another device.

  6. Review Google Drive’s version history – Right-click the file in Google Drive (web) and select “Manage versions.” Google keeps up to 100 versions of a file, providing a safety net against accidental corruption or deletion.
